CIAMPINO

CIAMPINO PILOT

Connecting industrial sites and mobility systems for more efficient and sustainable commuting and logistics

Ciampino, part of the Rome Metropolitan Area, is a suburban municipality with strong daily mobility flows and seasonal pressure linked to tourism. Its location and role within the metropolitan system create challenges in coordinating transport modes, managing data effectively, and ensuring safe conditions for all users.

As a satellite of the Vilnius & Riga Mega Pilot, Ciampino focuses on how data-driven tools can improve mobility planning and safety in a suburban context. The pilot tests how integrated data systems, real-time monitoring, and routing tools can be applied at local level, while contributing to a shared data framework across cities.

Key actions

CONTEXT

Ciampino is  a suburban area within the Rome Metropolitan Area, with daily commuting patterns and additional pressure from tourism-related mobility.

CHALLENGE

Limited multimodal connectivity, underused mobility data in planning, and safety risks for pedestrians and cyclists.

IMPACT

Better use of data in planning, safer conditions for vulnerable users, improved connectivity, and more efficient management of mobility flows.

Key actions

  • Peri-Urban Mobility Hubs (PUMHs)

Mobility hubs connecting different transport modes, improving access between the B. Braun site and surrounding areas while supporting multimodal travel.

  • Green-Safe Routing Algorithms (GSRA)

A routing system that provides safer and lower-emission routes based on real-time conditions, using data from traffic systems, sensors, and user activity.

  • Citizen-Voice App

A mobile application that allows residents to report hazards, accessibility barriers, and mobility issues, providing real-time input to planners and supporting community-driven safety improvements.

  • Peri-Urban Mobility Hubs (PUMHs)

Mobility hubs that connect different transport modes, improving accessibility and supporting better integration between Ciampino and the wider metropolitan area.

  • Advanced Mobility Data Space (aMDS)

A shared data platform that integrates data from traffic systems, sensors, and user input into a unified environment, enabling real-time monitoring and coordination of multimodal transport systems.

  • Predictive analytics and Digital Twin tools

Reusable, IoT-enabled packaging units designed for last-mile delivery, allowing tracking, optimisation of loading, and integration with low-emission modes such as cargo bikes.

  • Micro-logistics and multimodal integration

Adaptation of delivery and transport systems to better connect local industry, workers, and urban areas through more efficient and flexible mobility solutions.

Cooperation with Pilots

Ciampino builds directly on the data-driven approach developed in Vilnius and Riga, applying it in a suburban and tourism-influenced context.

  • Tests the implementation of the advanced Mobility Data Space (aMDS) at local level
  • Applies GSRA to improve safety and routing in suburban environments
  • Contributes local data, including tourism-related flows, to the shared data framework
  • Supports validation of data-driven tools across different urban conditions
