As part of the Rome Mega Pilot, project partners recently visited the facilities of consortium partner Laziale Distribuzione to examine logistics operations and explore opportunities to improve the connection between urban and peri-urban freight flows.
The visit focused on understanding the operational realities of goods distribution in the metropolitan area of Rome, where dense urban districts coexist with extensive peri-urban zones, creating significant challenges for logistics efficiency, congestion management, and emissions reduction.
A key element of the visit was the assessment of potential locations for a Peri-Urban Mobility Hub (PUMH). These hubs are being explored within BIO-INTEL-MOB as strategic points where freight movements can be better organised, supporting more efficient deliveries, improved modal integration, and lower environmental impacts.
Partners also discussed the current operational processes of Laziale Distribuzione and identified areas where innovation and decarbonisation measures could contribute to more sustainable logistics services. Insights gathered during the visit will support the development and testing of several solutions within the Rome pilot, including advanced routing tools, data-driven logistics management approaches, and governance frameworks that improve coordination between public and private stakeholders.
